“What makes West Rock Avenue so happy? Partly, it’s the houses, a terrifically appealing mix of stately and modest, small and medium and big,” wrote Mark Oppenheimer, a neighbor to one of the most significant homes on the street, in a recent New York Times article. On the corner of Yale Avenue, across from Edgewood Park and painted barn red, 295 West Rock Avenue is an excellent example of the Colonial Revival style. Designed by architects Shiner and Appel and built in 1916, it is in a state and national historic district. You enter the home through a classical portico with full pediment and slender columns. Leaded-glass windows frame the entry and vestibule doors, leading to a wide front hall and gracious stairway. The expansive living room has a large mantel fireplace flanked by bookcases. Off the living room is an enclosed heated sunroom. In keeping with the historical features of the property is a leaded-glass china cabinet in the dining room. A butler’s pantry leads to the kitchen, which has an attention-grabbing large paneled picture window that frames the back yard view. The updated kitchen has quartz countertops and new stainless-steel GE appliances.
